Jersey Report from Zimbabwe  Jan 2012

A group of fine heifers the reemits of one of the top herds in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Jersey herd has not escaped the ravages of the economic melt down of the 2006-2009. The national herd of Jerseys would be less than 1,000 pure bred down from a peak of 10,000 plus in 1998.  The remainder of the national herd of Jerseys tends to be concentrated in the Southern and Western drier and hotter regions. The Jerseys that are still alive today are truly hardy and adaptable.

The news from Zimbabwe is by no means all bad. There has been a increased interest in Jerseys as farmers of all sizes try to reinvest. Recently over 300 commercial Jersey and Jersey xbreds have been imported, and within the smallholder sector only Jersey semen is being used to upgrade the herd.
