Vice President´s Report for South America

South Africa Conference 2014

The problems with the communication with the national association of the different countries continue.  So I try to visit the dairy shows or meetings they have when my business will allow me.

So from June 2013 to July 2014 this big passion sent me to Ecuador, Uruguay, Brasil ,Peru and Paraguay.

It is the first time we have breeders from Paraguay buying live animals in Argentina to be presented at the dairy show in Asuncion . These animals won in all the classes, and we could find there animals from Uruguay also. There is a huge demand for live cattle and now we have new contacts from different breeders. More than 80% of the dairy business in Paraguay, dairies and milk plants, is running by the Mennonites near Filadelfia, in the center of Paraguay. All the dairy cattle records is running by the same organization:Aprole.( All dairy breeds)

On November I was invited to be judge at the new dairy Show in Latacunga, Ecuador.  A nice place with 50 head shown near the  Cotopaxi volcano.  It is my fourth time I have been there and the growth of the jersey breed is fantastic.

Brasil is a big country and I have a lot of problems with the communications.  I talked this with Jose De Lemos, and his answer is always the same.  They don’t know anything about the National Association.  They work only for the Gaucha Region (south). The Esteio show is a good place to see how they work.  I asked several times to know if they need something or new contacts, but no response.

I visited Uruguay on March when they organized farm visits and a small conference at Salto City. Was a nice time to see dairy breeders and the development of the jersey cow.

Also I had a few contacts with breeders from Bolivia, and the interest of buying our genetics.

No doubt, Colombia and Guatemala are the Associations that work very well, and my thanks to Gonzalo and Jacobo for their support.

Argentina report:

We are crossing difficult moments when we talked of dairies farmers.  Actually the price is very low and we can´t find good signs in the future. The government has tremendous problems with the financial business, and the farmers have the highest taxes I remember.

Every week a dairy farm is closed, and turns the business producing grains. Also is very difficult to find good workers and the salaries are very expensive.

The milk price of jersey is 20 % more than Holstein, and talking with the manager of La Serenisima (the main milk plant) he told me they process 9 million liters each day, and 1 million contains jersey genetics,  for the great content of protein, ( more than 3,50).

The demand of jersey genetics (live bulls-semen straws) is increasing. Here in Argentina a few years ago Holstein farmers breed animals with high production.  And they forgot the reproductive problems and the high cost to keep dry cows.  So this year we had a lot of enquiries about the jersey and his advantages.

We had done visits to the farms, and show these Holstein breeders the way this breed produce with low costs, and no problems to be pregnant.

However the best way of promotion is visiting the dairies and talk with them.  But here in Argentina we have long distances, and not enough people and time to do it.

We try to go to the main dairy shows and promote the breed.  Articles sent by e- mail and magazines are a good way to begin with this “cross”.

Colombia report:

During March, 2014 we have our Annual Meeting where the following Council was nominated:

President: Gonzalo Maldonado Gomez

Vice President: Maria Uricoechea

Directors: Marcela Restrepo de Greidinger,Alvaro Barriga Lesmes,Juan Carlos Hurtado,Ivan Dario Cely,Juan Carlos Parada,Luis Eduardo Velasquez  and Fernando Delgado.

At the same moment Mr Carlos Salas Borbon resigned at his position of general manager, because he wants to work in his private business, and was substituted by Mss Lina Alfonso. She has been working since June 2013 as technical assistant in this office.

During 2013 we admitted ten new jersey breeders, actually we are 90 active members. Since our foundation in 1982 to February 2014, we have printed 24092 issues of animal records;17025 purebred females,2930 crossbreds females,1551 males and 2580 founder cows, first, second and third generation.

During 2013 we have registered 766 (81, 5 % more) purebred females, 624 (82, 3 % more) crossbreds females, 525 (29, 5% less) founder cows, and 34 (55, 1 % less) purebred males, 1949 new records during this year.

We have the double importation of semen during 2013, 166.000 doses of semen jersey from USA, Canada, Denmark and New Zealand, second place behind the Holstein breed. Talking about the classifications this Association reports 1358 (23, 4 % less) females classified, with an average of 82.8 points, better than the last year.

During June the IV Milk International Festival and Congress was organized by Foncegan, in Santander Department. There was a good sale of purebred and crosses with high values.

During July we organized the 27° Jersey National Exhibition, with 94 head shown from eight different breeders of Antioquia, Cundinamarca and Santander. At this dairy show the Judge was Larry Sheardown.  Ganaderia Toscana was elected as Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor.

During September and December farm visits were planned at Cundinamarca and Antioquia, with the proposal to fortify our relationships between the members and talk about the experiences with the breed, telling the importance of doing type classifications as a way of selection and genetic progress.

Our association imported The Dairy Queen book, published by the World Jersey Cattle Bureau, which has been well received having a big success.  We also printed two issues of the Jersey Colombian magazine, where we write about this Book and techniques articles for the dairy farmers.

Consequently to the importation of near 28000 tons of powder milk, the prices that the industry pays to the farmers fell significantly last year.  In the second half of 2013 the price gets better, but not as the same levels of previous years.

On the other hand in August the country has a big agriculture strike, where the milk collection was difficult and the acquisition of inputs was affected.

In the past month the decreasing of the importation of milk powder ,the increasing of the international price ,and the exchange rate in the currency respect to the dollar, improved  an increase in the milk price near U$S 0,60.

Here in Colombia there is a resolution from de Agriculture Ministry, that stable that in the payment the industry has to consider the total milk solids, also the sanitary quality with lowest levels of cell counts and UFC.

As consequence the jersey farmers get 20/25 % more price than other dairies.  The association has entered in the National Program of Bovine Genetics Improvement (PNMGB), which is sponsored by the National Government, focused on features of the farms, animal tradability with microchips ear tags, and production monitoring back of milk volume with solid contents.
